LOS ANGELES — Actors Edward Norton and Ed Begley Jr. joined several Southland lawmakers Saturday in calling for the passage of legislation to give builders of affordable housing incentives for putting solar panels on roofs.
The actors and other environmental activists joined Assemblywoman Fran Pavley and Sens. Kevin Murray and John Campbell at a South Los Angeles home where they said utility bills have been virtually eliminated due to the installation of solar roofs.
Also present was Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti.
Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, said the legislation would reduce utility bills for low-income residents and generate clean energy.
Norton said in a statement that installing solar panels on low-income homes "helps reduce energy bills for families who can benefit from those savings the most."
One of the two companion bills, SB1, recently passed the state Senate and awaits approval by the Assembly. The other has passed the Assembly and waits approval by the Senate.
Murray, D-Los Angeles, and Campbell, R-Costa Mesa, co-authored the Senate bill, while Pavley authored the Assembly version.
